Meet Alexandra Schulze of The Wild Bunch, the Vancouver-based floral studio known for its natural, freestyle approach to floral design. Working with seasonal ingredients and sourcing locally whenever possible, The Wild Bunch collaborates with a growing network of flower farms, foragers and gardeners to create arrangements that feel organic and unexpected. Ahead of Stems & Staples, our fall afternoon with The Wild Bunch and Free People, we chatted with Alexandra about finding your own style, embracing seasonal colour and texture, and the things flowers and getting dressed have in common.

Q: You’re self-taught. How did learning through experimentation shape the way you work?

A:  It kept our style true and unique to ourselves. We were guided by feeling and not influenced by others. Each designer has their own personal style within the Wild Bunch aesthetic we’ve become known for.

Q: You also teach floral workshops. What do you enjoy about seeing someone else interpret flowers in their own way?

A:  I love seeing people's style and personality interpreted in their designs. They have all the same ingredients, but their arrangements are unique to themselves.

Q: There’s something nice about pairing flowers with getting dressed. What do you think the two have in common?

A: I’ve always felt like choosing an outfit is similar to choosing ingredients for a design. They have very common steps, like choosing a complimentary colour palette and adding texture. Both can vary depending on the season. You can always add a pop of something unexpected,  like some height for drama in a bouquet/arrangement or a pop of bright colour with your neutral outfit.

Q: When choosing flowers for a fall event like ours, what are you looking for to make the arrangements feel connected to the season?

A: Seasonal colours and textures like grasses and pods are a reflection of the transition from summer to fall.

Q: Are there any colour or texture combinations you’re particularly excited to work with this fall?

A: Warm oranges, pinks, and burgundies, paired with lots of seasonal grasses like teff grass, bottle brush grass, and Korean feather grass, and more!

Q: What do you hope someone feels when they receive one of your arrangements?

A: Happy, loved, refreshed, taken aback, wow-ed.
